Mark Swinnerton is the Founder and CEO of Green Gravity, based in Wollongong, Australia. Mark began his career in metallurgy and has spent two decades in the resources industry, supporting global mining operations. He is now tackling the ongoing challenges of legacy mines and the increasing need for better renewable energy storage through his company Green Gravity, which aims to repurposes the abundance of disused mines around the world to house gravitational storage and bridge downtimes in renewable energy supply in a cost effective, automated and sustainable way.

On today’s show, Mark shares his incredible multi-decadal experience of the mining industry and the numerous future challenges that it faces. We discuss the increasing importance of storage technology in a world where renewable energy is becoming commonplace and gain insight into how he is giving abandoned mines a new lease on life and how Green Gravity is supporting countries in the sustainable energy transition

Biography

Mark Swinnerton is the Founder and CEO of Green Gravity, an energy storage company that uses legacy mine shafts and gravitational storage to support the energy transition, based in Wollongong, Australia. He was formerly Vice President in Operations Services at BHP and has been in the mining and resources industry for over 20 years. Mark studied Metallurgy at the University of Wollongong, obtaining a Bachelor in Materials Engineering and then a Masters in Engineering (specializing in Metallurgical processing). He is a global mining executive with a proven record of sustainably delivering innovative solutions to enterprise level issues, while building and inclusive and motivated team culture.

Mark is actively working to support the Australian energy transition. Australia has an urgent need to improve the smooth integration of renewable energy into our energy grid and, at the same time, has a rich and deep mining legacy which, when partnered with the right clean technology, can form part of the solution to rapid and economic decarbonisation.
